8 – Gap year: Who am I

This is a short series of blog posts, which explain how my gap year has helped me to reach some of my dreams and teach me a lot about the world and myself.

Everyone in the dormitory was getting ready to sleep. All lights were already turned off as this was the internal house rule for all the teenagers who lived here. Also this boy was lying in his bed, waiting for the midnight. Soon, he will become 17. He watched the digital clock as it showed 23:59. Soon it will be his birthday.

“Good morning everyone, sit down please”, said the teacher and the whole class took a seat. “I would like to introduce to you your new classmate…”. This new boy in the class was sitting in the back and shivering a lot. He was really stressed out, as he just came to Germany to attend a secondary school. This was his first English class.

“Damn, why is this stupid printer not working?!” a fifty-years-old bank manager was getting really angry as he had to print a hand out for a presentation he had to deliver in 5 minutes to his boss. “I swear that I will toss this crappy machine out of the window if it does not start printing now!!!” he started to yell and everyone in the open-office could hear him. However, people continued working and did not pay any attention to this manager.

Liebe Grüße
Thomas

The letter was written in German, decorated with some colorful leaves which fell down during the fall. A little boy was very excited to get this letter from a foreign country. He did not understand entirely what it says but he was ready to find out with the help of an internet translator. He translated word by word, making sure that he understands everything correctly. Then he started to write his answer. It took him a while, as it was not easy for him to write in a foreign language, however, he was now more self-confident, that Thomas would understand his German, as he seemed to understand also his first letter.

2 – Travelling by a high-speed train

At first, you could hear just a honk somewhere far away. Suddenly, something was approaching, it was louder and louder. The noise was very loud and it felt like there has to be something close to you, which was producing this noise, but you could not see anything, just hear. A second later, you could identify that there was a train coming out of a curve, approaching with high-speed. The train did not stop or slow down, moreover, it got louder and there was this tension as it was coming towards the platform, where people were standing, waiting for another train. Most of them stepped away, to be in a secure zone as if they were scared that the train would derail. As it was passing by, the noise was very loud and people were covering their ears. It got quite windy, which even multiplied the scary effect of this noisy thing. One little guy did not step away. He just stared at this long monster, which was so long that it looked like it would never end. He started to count: “one, two, three, four, five, ……… forty-two (the train was passing by faster than he could count) forty- ehm, fifty, fifty-one!” The last coach of this long cargo train passed the platform and the little boy could observe how the train was becoming smaller until it completely disappeared. The same happened with the noise, just a few seconds later.

1 – Speak German like a native speaker

The sun was shining and you could feel the heat in the air. It was a beautiful late spring afternoon like any other in this hot month and people were just coming back from work in their cars, trying to hurry in order to be home as soon as possible. On a sidewalk next to this busy street was a small boy riding a bike as he used to do always after he was done with school. However, this was not a normal afternoon for him. He just got an acceptation letter from the secondary school, which he applied for. His heart was beating faster, as he knew that many things in his life are going to change soon…
